Spansey Wood

A proper Essex woodland that doesn't require a trek to reach from Halstead. Spansey Wood is the kind of place where you can actually breathe - genuine old-growth forest rather than the managed patches you find closer to the towns. The canopy here is thick enough that you'll want to visit when it's not bucketing down, but even then the paths hold up reasonably well.

What you're doing is walking. That's it, and that's why people come. There's no visitor centre, no craft shop, no pre-packaged experience. Just woodland. If your idea of a good morning is moving through trees without a destination, this works. Kids under eight tend to lose interest after forty minutes unless you're the sort to build dens and hunt for imaginary creatures.

Histoty types won't find much to grab onto here - it's not a nature reserve with interpretation boards. Bird watchers might do better, particularly in spring, but honestly the wood exists mostly for what it is rather than what you can learn from it.

It works as a palate cleanser during a park-based holiday - perhaps after a day at Gosfield Lake Resort or a night at Woodchests Glamping. Neither venue is far, so you could combine a morning woodland walk with afternoon activities elsewhere. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking it slowly, forty-five if you just want air and exercise.
