Spa

The Roman settlement at Spa, just outside Hebden Bridge, is one of those sites that rewards a bit of detective work. What you're actually looking at is the remains of a fort that guarded the Pennine passes - not much to shout about visually, but the location tells the story brilliantly. Standing here, you understand why the Romans bothered: views across the valley, commanding position, access to the moorland routes they needed to control.

Histor buffs will get the most from this. Casual visitors might find themselves thinking "right, that's a foundation" and moving on, which is fair enough. The site isn't heavily interpreted, so you'll want to do your homework beforehand or bring a decent guidebook. It's genuinely quiet though - you won't fight crowds, and on a clear day the Pennine views are proper worth the stop.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is less than half a mile away - it's an easy morning outing before exploring Hebden Bridge itself. Old Chamber Camping, just 1.7 miles down the road, gives you a similar base. Combine it with walks around the moorland and a wander through Hebden Bridge town and you've got a decent half-day sorted. Free to visit, no formal opening hours that I'm aware of - just rock up. Allow an hour if you're properly interested, half that if you're just passing through.
