Sowerby Castle

What's left of Sowerby Castle is more atmosphere than architectural grandeur, which is precisely why it works. Perched above Hebden Bridge, this medieval stronghold is now a ruin - crumbling walls and a few sturdy corners that hint at what once commanded the valley floor. You're looking at the bones of a 14th-century fortress, weathered and honest.

Walking up to it from Hebden Bridge takes about forty minutes depending on your fitness. The approach is the real payoff: moorland paths that open out suddenly to reveal these old stones against the Pennine backdrop. History buffs will appreciate the setting more than architecture enthusiasts - there's not enough standing structure to get genuinely excited about stonework. But ramblers and anyone after a proper walk with a destination will find it worthwhile.

The castle itself won't keep you long. Twenty minutes of poking around the remains, reading what you can interpret from the layout, maybe sitting on a wall watching the light change across the valley. Bring a flask. The views are genuinely good, and on a clear day you can pick out the surrounding moorland for miles.

Combine it with Hebden Bridge's cafes and shops, or use it as a training walk if you're tackling bigger stuff in the Pennines. Free to visit, weather-dependent, and best saved for decent daylight.
