Southwick Park Lake

A proper stretch of water just outside Southampton that's more functional than Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point. Southwick Park Lake sits in what feels like genuine countryside despite being minutes from the city, and it's the kind of place locals actually use rather than tourists clogging up for photos.

The lake itself is decent for a walk around - flat terrain, no dramatic views, but peaceful enough if you want to shake off the Southampton sprawl. Fishermen work the banks regularly, and you'll spot the odd heron if you're quiet about it. It's not Windermere, but it's honest water.

Walkers will get a solid hour here without feeling rushed. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited after that - there's no café, no facilities that I could spot, no playground to occupy them. It works best as a leg-stretch between other things rather than a destination in itself.

The nearby caravan parks - Rookesbury Park is the closest at 3.6 miles, and ScottsHaven just beyond that - make this a useful addition to a New Forest or Southampton-based holiday rather than the main event. If you're camping locally and need a gentle morning walk, absolutely. If you're planning your day around it, you'll want more.

No entry fees that I'm aware of, and you can do the circuit in under 90 minutes. Best visited when the light's decent - grey Hampshire days don't do it any favours.
