Beaconhill Beeches

The beech trees here are seriously tall. Beaconhill Beeches, just outside Southampton, is one of those proper Hampshire woodland spots where you can actually breathe - the kind of place where the canopy gets so thick you forget what blue sky looks like. The forest floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with centuries of leaf fall, and in autumn the whole thing glows copper and gold.

It's ideal for walkers rather than picnickers - there's no visitor centre or facilities, just the trees themselves and whatever paths you can pick out. Bring decent boots if it's been wet. An hour's amble is enough to clear your head; three hours if you want to really explore the network of tracks. The nearest town is Southampton, which feels miles away the moment you step into the beech shade.

Historically minded types will get something out of knowing these beeches have been here for generations - they've got that ancient woodland feel without being stiff about it. Kids under about eight might find it a bit samey after a while, but teenagers who actually walk will appreciate the peace.
