Southchurch Park

Southchurch Park is a proper nature reserve that sits just outside Rochford, and it's one of those places that rewards you for actually getting out of the car and walking about. The marshland and wetland habitats here draw serious numbers of birds - herons, egrets, warblers depending on the season - and there's a genuine sense of being somewhere wild even though you're only minutes from civilisation.

Walkers and birdwatchers will find plenty to keep them occupied for a couple of hours. Bring binoculars if you've got them. The trails wind through reedbeds and open water, and the light at dusk is particularly good if you can time it right. It's not dramatic landscape stuff - there are no sudden vistas or dramatic elevations - but it's the kind of place that grows on you the longer you spend time there.

For families with young kids, it depends entirely on how patient they are with slow-paced wildlife watching. There's no playground or novelty factor, so this isn't a place to burn off energy. Older children interested in nature will get something out of it though.
