Wibblers Brewery

The brewery sits just outside Rochford, tucked into the Essex countryside where you wouldn't expect to find much of interest - and that's exactly why it works. Wibblers is a proper working brewery, the kind of place where you can watch beer being made rather than just drink the finished product in some corporate tasting room.

What you get here depends on their current opening schedule, but when they're open for visits it's genuinely worth an afternoon if you're into craft beer or fancy learning how the stuff actually gets made. The brewery tour (assuming they're running them) walks you through the whole operation - fermentation tanks, bottling, the lot - and ends with a tasting. It's hands-on without being overly touristy.

This works best for adults rather than families with young kids, unless your children are the type who genuinely enjoy watching industrial processes. Even then, an hour covers it properly. The real draw is if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Steeple Bay Holiday Park is barely three miles away, as is Riverside Village - and you want something proper to do on a rainy afternoon that beats another round of crazy golf.

Check before you go though. Opening hours and admission aren't straightforward, and you'll want to ring ahead to confirm they're doing tours. Essex breweries aren't as common as they used to be, so if this one's actually operating, it's worth the drive from Rochford.
