Southampton Cycle Speedway

The old cycle speedway track near Ashurst is one of those forgotten corners of Hampshire that doesn't announce itself loudly. It's a proper slice of mid-20th century sporting history - a banked oval where riders would race bicycles at speeds that seem mad when you stand trackside and think about it. The venue itself is modest, just earth and grass these days rather than the thriving competition ground it once was, but that's rather the point. You get a genuine sense of what these events meant to local communities before motorised racing took over.

This works best for cycling enthusiasts or anyone with a taste for industrial heritage. Kids might find it bit underwhelming unless they're already into bikes - there's not much to actively do, more to observe and imagine. Allow 30-45 minutes if you're passing through, longer if you're photographing or sketching.

If you're camping nearby - Ashurst Campsite and Matley Wood are both solid bases - the speedway makes for an easy afternoon outing. It won't eat up your whole day, which means you can easily combine it with other local walks or attractions in the New Forest area. Worth stopping if you're in the region, but don't plan a trip around it alone. Check ahead for access and opening hours before you visit, as facilities can be patchy.
