South Petherton Recreation Ground

The Recreation Ground sits quietly on the edge of South Petherton, a modest strip of green that locals actually use rather than tourists rushing past. It's the sort of place where you'll find dog walkers and families letting kids burn off energy rather than tour groups with cameras. The ground itself is fairly straightforward - open grassland with mature trees dotted about, the kind of space that works well for a post-lunch stroll or a proper run around if you've got little ones in tow.

This is genuinely free access and doesn't demand much time. Twenty minutes to half an hour will cover the whole thing comfortably, so don't expect to spend your afternoon here. If you're camping at Thorney Lakes or Esme's Escape just down the road, it's worth a morning visit before heading off elsewhere. Families with young kids will appreciate the open space and lack of hazards - no cliff edges or dodgy footing to worry about. Walkers might combine it with exploring the village itself rather than treating it as a destination in its own right. It's the sort of spot that makes sense when you're in the area, not a reason to be in the area. Honest assessment: pleasant enough, but don't make it the centrepiece of your Somerset break.
