South Devon Railway Museum

The railway museum sits just outside South Brent, where you can climb aboard vintage steam engines and explore carriages that actually ran on Devon's branch lines decades ago. It's a working collection rather than a stuffy exhibition - the volunteers here genuinely know their stuff and will chat your ear off about coupling rods and boiler pressure if you let them.

You'll spend a good hour or two wandering around the rolling stock, peering into driver's cabs and reading the histories pinned to each engine. Kids absolutely love clambering through the carriages, though toddlers might find the climb in and out tedious after the first couple. There's something oddly moving about these machines - they're not polished museum pieces but honest, working locomotives that hauled real people and freight through the moors.

The whole thing runs on donations rather than steep entry fees, which is refreshing. Come on a quiet weekday if you can, because weekend crowds do pack it out. You're only thirty minutes from Ashbourne Woods or Dornafield if you're camping in the area, making this a decent wet-weather backup or a quick morning stop before heading onto Dartmoor proper.
