Soutarhill

The stone circle at Soutarhill sits on open moorland a few miles outside Perth, and it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort to find. You're looking at four standing stones arranged in a rough circle - Bronze Age work, probably four thousand years old, which puts most things in perspective when you're standing there. The site itself is windswept and properly atmospheric, the kind of spot where you understand why ancient people chose high ground for their rituals.

This is archaeology for people who like a walk more than a visitor centre. There's no car park, no interpretation board, no admission fee - you park near the road and make your way across rough ground. It takes maybe fifteen minutes on foot, which means kids who are interested in stones and history will get something out of it, but younger ones might grumble about the approach. The views back towards Perth and the River Tay are decent enough to make the trudge worthwhile.

Don't expect crowds or facilities. It's the sort of place you visit because you want to, not because the marketing board has told you to.
