Watermill

The Watermill is one of those sites that rewards a bit of curiosity. You're looking at the remains of a medieval mill that once ground grain for the local community, and what survives tells you quite a bit about how things actually worked back then. The structure itself is modest - no grand ruins here - but the location by the water makes sense the moment you arrive. You can see why someone chose to build it.

It's mainly for people with a genuine interest in industrial archaeology or local history. If you're already exploring Perthshire and happen to be near Perth, it's worth the small detour, especially if you're walking the area. But don't expect a visitor centre or interpretation boards - you need to come with some prior knowledge or a good guidebook to get the most from it. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already keen on how medieval mills functioned.

The site is free to visit. Allow maybe thirty minutes, longer if you're into sketching or photography. Nearby, you've got Newmill Farm Camping just half a mile away, which makes it convenient if you're basing yourself in a caravan. The bigger sites at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Perth Caravan Park are each within five or six miles, so it's manageable as part of a wider itinerary around Perthshire.
