Solent Way

The Solent Way is a coastal path that runs for 21 miles between Lymington and Totland Bay, hugging the western edge of the Isle of Wight with views across the Solent towards the New Forest. You don't walk it all in one go - most people pick a section that suits their energy levels and the time they've got. The full route takes about 8-9 hours if you're tackling it end-to-end, but plenty of folk do just a couple of miles and call it a day.

What makes it special is the variety. You get proper woodland paths through pine and oak, then sudden views over salt marshes and water. On clear days you can see across to the mainland easily. The walking is gentle enough that families with younger legs won't struggle, though the western sections near Yarmouth can get a bit muddy after rain. Serious ramblers often use it as part of a longer island circuit.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Shorefield is well-positioned - the Solent Way gives you easy access to some decent coastal walks without needing to drive anywhere. Lytton Lawn Touring Park is even closer, right on the edge of Shorefield village. There's no admission charge and no set opening hours; it's a public right of way you can walk whenever suits you. Spring and early summer are best - fewer midges, drier ground, and the light stays longer for evening strolls. Allow a solid half-day minimum if you're doing more than a gentle mile or two.
