Keyhaven & Pennington Marshes Nature Reserve

Salt marsh meets sky in this properly wild corner of Hampshire, where the Solent stretches out towards the Isle of Wight. The nature reserve covers both sides of Keyhaven village, with boardwalks threading through reed beds and lagoons that attract thousands of wading birds throughout the year. On a clear day you'll spot curlews, redshanks and perhaps a marsh harrier wheeling overhead.

Birdwatchers will have a field day here, particularly during spring and autumn migrations when the variety is at its peak. The western section near Pennington offers the best vantage points, while the eastern marshes provide closer encounters with the wildlife. Families with older children who can handle a decent walk will enjoy the experience, though toddlers might find the terrain challenging.

Free to explore and open year-round, the reserve works well as a morning or afternoon trip from nearby Lymington. Allow at least two hours to do it justice. The coastal path connects to the Solent Way, so you can easily extend your visit. After staying at places like Shorefield Country Park or Lytton Lawn Touring Park, it's the perfect antidote to busier New Forest attractions - proper peace and quiet with views that stretch for miles across the water.
