Snorkel Upper Loch Torridon (Torridon Snorkel Trail)

The underwater world of Upper Loch Torridon hits differently when you're actually in it. This snorkel trail takes you into proper cold-water adventure - the kind where you need a decent wetsuit and a bit of nerve. The loch bed here is surprisingly rich: kelp forests, starfish, the occasional wrasse darting about. You're looking at depths that start shallow near the shore then drop away, so it's not just for experienced snorkelers, though they'll get more from it.

The setting alone makes it worth the trip from Strathcarron. Those mountains rising straight up behind you - Liathach and the rest of the Torridon range - create a proper amphitheatre. The water's clean, visibility can be decent on a calm day, and you might spot seals if you're lucky. Allow a couple of hours all in, though some people linger longer just floating and watching.

It's brilliant for active families who don't mind the cold, and anyone serious about Scottish marine life will find it rewarding. Summer's your best bet - calmer water, more daylight, warmer air between dips. Bring your own kit unless you know where to hire locally (worth checking ahead from Strathcarron). The trail is free, but you'll want to be competent in water; this isn't a paddling pool.
