Snapper woods

The woodland path through Snapper Woods feels properly separated from the world, even though Barnstaple's only a stone's throw away. This is genuine Devon scrub and mixed woodland - the kind of place where you actually notice the light filtering through the canopy rather than just walking under trees. There's water here too, which means the birdwatching is genuinely decent if you're patient enough to stop and listen instead of trudging straight through.

It's not a manicured nature reserve with information boards and marked trails (at least, not obviously). You're navigating by instinct and a bit of local knowledge, which some will love and others will find slightly annoying. Families with young children might manage a 45-minute wander, but it's the kind of place where patient walkers and birders actually want to settle in for longer. The ground can get boggy in patches after rain, so decent boots are proper essential.

If you're staying at HARTA Retreat or Stowford Farm Meadows - both excellent bases just up the road - this makes a lovely gentle morning out before the weather turns. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a broader exploration of North Devon's woodland, it works well. The real draw is the quietness. You won't see crowds. You might not see another person at all, depending on when you visit. That's either exactly what you want or completely the opposite. For walkers wanting to escape the main tourist drag around Barnstaple itself, it's well worth finding.
