Hammetts Park

Hammetts Park is a proper nature reserve just outside Barnstaple, the kind of place that rewards a quiet morning walk rather than demanding a full day's commitment. You're looking at woodland paths, open grassland, and the chance to spot birds and local wildlife without the crowds you'd find at bigger attractions. It's ideal for families who want to let kids burn off energy among the trees, or for anyone after a straightforward ramble without navigating a maze of marked trails.

The reserve sits well within reach of the holiday parks clustered nearby - HARTA Retreat is barely a ten-minute stroll away, and if you're staying at Newberry Valley or Watermouth Valley, you've got a pleasant walk or quick drive. It's the sort of place that works as a half-morning activity before heading into Barnstaple town centre for lunch, or a late-afternoon potter if the light's good.

On paper, it doesn't sound like much. No visitor centre, no facilities that we can nail down, no obvious paid entry or timed experiences. That's actually the appeal. You turn up, you walk, you breathe a bit of Devon air. Birdwatchers will get something out of it; young kids might lose interest after an hour unless they're genuinely keen on spotting things. Spring and early summer are your best windows - fewer midges, more life moving about. Worth combining with other walks in the area rather than treating it as a standalone destination, but if you're staying nearby and want to move your legs without serious effort, it does the job.
