Snactry Wood

Walk far enough into Snactry Wood and you'll forget you're only minutes from York. The forest sits close enough to be a proper afternoon trip from the city centre, yet far enough to feel genuinely remote once the trees close in around you. It's mixed woodland - oak, ash, birch - with a decent network of paths that wind through without being so well-marked they feel corporate. You won't find visitor centres or ice cream vans here, which is rather the point.

The appeal is straightforward: walking. This is somewhere to stretch your legs for an hour or two, follow what looks like an interesting trail, maybe find a fallen log to sit on and actually think about something other than your phone. Families with older kids will get on well here - younger ones might flag after thirty minutes unless they're the type to get excited about finding sticks and moss. Serious walkers could string it together with nearby routes, but it's not a destination in itself.

Better paired with a stay at one of the holiday parks dotted around York - Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm and Acorn Glade Glamping are both close by - and then used as a morning walk before heading into the city proper. Free to access, though there's no formal car park that I'm aware of, so check locally before turning up. Go mid-week if you can stomach the drive from the coast; weekends pull in the York day-trippers and it loses some of its quiet appeal.
