Smithton Church

The small stone kirk sits quietly on the outskirts of Inverness, the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. Smithton Church is a genuinely modest affair - no soaring Gothic arches or stained glass theatrics, just honest Highland architecture doing what it's meant to do. The building itself dates back centuries, though exactly how many depends on which local you ask, and stepping inside feels like walking into someone's living room rather than a grand tourist attraction.

There's not masses to do here, but that's rather the point. It's the kind of stop that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Ardtower Caravan Park is barely a mile away, or Go Glamping at Loch Ness if you fancy something more upmarket. Twenty minutes would cover a proper look around, read the various plaques and memorials, and take a few photos of the graveyard with Inverness sprawling in the distance.

Historically minded types will appreciate the bones of it, and if you're driving between Loch Ness and the city centre, you might as well swing past. It's not life-changing, but it's a genuine bit of Highland heritage without any of the coach tour nonsense. Kids won't be entertained for long, but adults after a peaceful half-hour will find it worthwhile. Free to visit, obviously - it's a working church.
