Smallacombe Rocks

The walk up to Smallacombe Rocks takes you through proper Devon moorland, and the payoff is a granite outcrop with views that stretch across Dartmoor in all directions. Nothing fancy here - just weathered stone, wind, and space. You'll find yourself standing at the edge looking back towards Newton Abbot and the softer farmland beyond, with the moor rolling away endlessly in every other direction.

It's a straightforward walk from the car park, nothing that'll challenge serious hikers but enough of a climb to feel like you've earned it. Allow yourself an hour from start to finish if you're not rushing. The rocks themselves are worth scrambling on for a few minutes - the views from the top are genuinely good, especially on a clear day when you can pick out distant tors and the texture of the moorland changes with the light.

This works well for walkers who want a proper outing without disappearing into wilderness for half the day. Families with reasonable fitness levels will manage it fine. The nearby Oakmoor Touring Park, just over five miles away, makes a solid base if you're planning a few days exploring the moor - you get the space and quiet of this landscape without being completely cut off from civilization.

Go when the weather's decent. Moorland can turn grim quickly, and there's not much shelter up here if clouds roll in. Early morning visits tend to be quieter, and you'll likely have the rocks largely to yourself.
