Small Enton Lake

The water at Enton Lake sits perfectly still most mornings, which is exactly why locals keep quiet about it. This small Surrey lake, just outside Guildford, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a genuine spot where you might actually see a kingfisher instead of pretending you've seen one.

It's essentially a tranquil body of water surrounded by woodland, good for a gentle walk and a sit-down with a flask. There's no fanfare, no visitor centre, no gift shop trying to sell you a mug. You show up, walk the perimeter if you're feeling energetic, or simply park yourself on the bank and watch the world move slower than usual. The whole circuit takes about thirty minutes if you're dawdling, which is rather the point.

Families with younger kids will get an hour out of it maximum - pond-dipping types might manage longer, but it's not a full-day affair. Serious walkers and birdwatchers will find it worthwhile as a quiet stop between bigger destinations. There's genuine appeal in how unremarkable it is.

Car access is straightforward and parking exists nearby. Admission appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - bring your own refreshment. If you're staying at Glamping Holiday or Care Ashore Campsite on the Springbok Estate, both within six miles, Enton Lake makes a perfectly decent morning outing before heading elsewhere for the main event. Don't expect drama. Expect peace.
