Slieveard

Getting to the top of Slieveard is a proper walk, but you're rewarded with views that stretch across Fermanagh and beyond. It's not a technical climb - more of a solid hill walk that takes around two hours return from the car park near Omagh - but the terrain can be boggy underfoot, so decent boots are essential.

The summit itself isn't marked with anything grand, just open moorland at roughly 1,400 feet where the wind tends to pick up considerably. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a grey one, you're mostly surrounded by cloud and your own thoughts, which has its own appeal.

This appeals to walkers who want some proper exertion without needing mountaineering skills. Families with primary-school-age kids can manage it if everyone's reasonably fit, though younger children might find the bog sections tedious. History types won't find much here - it's about the landscape and the walk itself.
