Slieve Gullion North Cairn

You'll need to be properly committed to climb Slieve Gullion, but the North Cairn sitting at the summit makes the slog worthwhile. This is a Bronze Age burial mound - we're talking 4,000 years old - and standing inside the passage grave with the stone walls either side of you creates an oddly intimate connection to people you'll never know.

The walk itself takes a good hour each way from the car park, and it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs the next morning. The cairn itself is less dramatic than you might hope - it's been sitting on this mountain for millennia, after all, and weather doesn't do archaeology any favours. But that's precisely why it matters. This isn't a reconstructed visitor attraction with interpretive boards. It's the real thing, weathered and genuine.

Walkers and archaeology types will get the most from it. Small children will likely lose interest halfway up unless they're unusually determined. Go on a clear day if you can - the views across County Armagh from the top are genuinely excellent, and on misty days the whole experience becomes a bit of a trudge for not much payoff.

It's free to visit, and there's no set opening hours - you're essentially accessing a hillside. The nearest town is Newry, about 20 minutes away. If you're basing yourself at Hilltop Hideaway nearby, this works as a proper half-day outing that combines history with genuine exercise. Well worth the effort.
