Slieve Gullion Forest Park

The walk up Slieve Gullion itself is the main event here - a proper mountain experience without needing to be a fell runner. The forest park wraps around it, offering decent walking trails through mixed woodland before you reach the open mountainside. The summit gives you views across the border into the Republic and down towards Newry, which frankly beats a lot of more famous peaks in terms of effort-to-reward ratio.

It's mountain walking for people who don't want to spend eight hours on a ridge. Allow two to three hours for the main climb depending on fitness. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections, though there are gentler forest loops if you want to bail out early. The views from the top shift depending on weather - on a clear day you can see proper distances, but on many Irish days you're getting mist and drama instead, which has its own appeal.

The forest park itself is free to roam. Newry sits just down the road, so you can combine this with town visits or lunch spots. If you're basing yourself nearby - say at somewhere like Hilltop Hideaway, which sits only 4.5 miles away - this makes an excellent morning or afternoon outing. It's not a destination you'd plan a week around, but it's absolutely worth including in an Ulster holiday itinerary where you're tackling the Mournes or exploring County Down. Go on a weekday if you can; weekends pull in the Dublin day-trippers.
