It's less a polished visitor attraction and more a place you need to actually explore on foot. Walkers and anyone interested in industrial archaeology will get the most from it - there's genuine atmosphere here, not just a plaque and a car park. History types will appreciate how nature's quietly taken back what people carved out, layer by layer. Bring decent boots though. The terrain's uneven and the ground can be damp.

Allowing an hour or so works well depending on how thoroughly you want to poke around. There's no visitor centre nonsense, which is either exactly what you want or not your thing at all. If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Wild Northumberland Glamping is barely a mile away, and Demesne Farm sits just over four miles out - this makes a solid morning's work before heading back for lunch. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity rather than promising a slick experience. Real Northumberland, basically.
