Habitancum: Roman Fort

The Roman fort at Habitancum sits on the outskirts of Hexham, a working archaeology site that doesn't shout about itself. What you'll find are the physical remains of a settlement that housed soldiers guarding Hadrian's Wall - low stone walls, earthworks, and the occasional artefact that gives you a real sense of how the Romans organised their northern frontier. It's not Pompeii. There's no museum, no visitor centre, no one selling you expensive drinks. You're essentially wandering around fields and following the faint traces of a military complex.

History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit, particularly if you're already Hadrian's Wall bound. Families with young children might find it underwhelming after thirty minutes unless they're genuinely keen on Romans.
