Slate Hill

The walk up Slate Hill from Penrith isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs. The fell itself is modest by Lake District standards - more of a solid training run than a proper mountain - but the views back towards Penrith and across to the Pennines make it worth the effort. On a clear day you can see proper distance from the summit. The paths are straightforward and well-trodden, nothing technical, so this works well for families wanting to build up to bigger walks without overcommitting.

It's the sort of place you do in an afternoon rather than make a day of it. Ninety minutes up and down if you're steady. The terrain is grassland and moorland - nothing dramatic - and you're never far from Penrith if you need an escape route. Parking is near the start, which saves messing about.

If you're camped at Howdy Glamping just down the road, this is a natural companion to your base. Close enough that you won't waste half your morning driving, but far enough that it doesn't feel like you've just gone round the corner. Worth doing in the morning before the weather turns, especially in autumn and winter when the light shifts quick and cloud can roll in fast. There's nothing up there to shelter you, so check conditions first.

Historians won't find much to linger over - it's a walk for the legs and lungs, not the head. But if you want to stretch yourself without getting into serious fell walking, Slate Hill does the job properly.
