Slapton Sands Monument

A simple stone memorial stands on the shingle beach at Slapton Sands, just south of Kingsbridge, marking one of World War II's darkest secrets. In April 1944, American servicemen training for D-Day were caught in a German attack here - around 749 soldiers died in what became known as Operation Tiger. It's a sobering spot, and worth the visit if you're spending time in South Devon.

The monument itself is modest - a granite obelisk facing the sea - but the location tells the story. The whole beach was evacuated for months while the Americans practised their amphibious assault. Walking the shingle and taking in the peaceful scene now makes the historical weight of it hit harder. There's no visitor centre or facilities, which means you get an uncluttered experience. Allow twenty minutes to read the inscriptions and absorb the atmosphere.

History enthusiasts will find this genuinely moving; younger kids might lose interest quickly unless you're good at storytelling. It's free and accessible year-round, though winter storms can make the beach feel particularly raw and haunting. The nearest town, Kingsbridge, sits inland a few miles and has decent shops and pubs for lunch after.
