Slapton Sands

The shingle beach at Slapton stretches for about two miles between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, backed by a freshwater lagoon that's rarer than you'd think along this coast. It's a proper working beach - fishing boats still launch from here, and the pebbles crunch under your feet in a way that sandy beaches never do. The lagoon behind is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, so it draws birdwatchers year-round, especially in winter when migrating species pass through. There's a memorial to American servicemen who trained here during World War II, which adds a sobering layer to what's otherwise a straightforward day out.

Walkers get the most from Slapton. The South West Coast Path runs right along it, and you can knock out a decent stretch without much fuss. Families with young kids might find the shingle a bit tough going - the pebbles don't lend themselves to sandcastles - but older children will enjoy scrambling about. It's genuinely free to access, though parking can get tight in summer. Allow two to three hours if you're combining it with a walk; half that if you're just having a look.

Stay at Start Bay Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, just 1.6 miles away, and you've got the beach on your doorstep. Wilton Farm, four miles south, is equally well-rated. Both work brilliantly as bases for exploring this stretch of the South Hams coastline. Slapton itself doesn't have much else - no cafes right on the beach - so plan accordingly.
