Slade Copse Tor

The climb up to Slade Copse Tor doesn't announce itself with fanfare. You're threading through Devon woodland one moment, and the next the ground drops away sharply, revealing moorland that stretches toward Newton Abbot below. It's a proper little peak, this one - nothing mountainous, but enough elevation to make your legs know they've worked for the view.

The tor itself is granite-topped and stands about 300 metres up. On a clear day you can see right across the surrounding countryside, which makes the twenty-minute scramble worthwhile. The walk in is straightforward enough, following worn paths through mixed woodland and scrubland. It's exactly the kind of spot that rewards a morning visit - come early and you'll likely have it to yourself.

This is one for walkers more than casual strollers. You'll want proper footwear, and there's scrambling involved at the top if you want to reach the highest point. Kids aged eight upwards will manage fine; younger ones might find the terrain a bit much. The walk takes roughly ninety minutes there and back from the car park, depending on how long you linger on top.
