Skir Gut (Tinners' Gully)

The granite channel running through the hillside near South Brent tells the story of Devon's tin-mining past in the most direct way possible. Skir Gut - or Tinners' Gully, as locals call it - is essentially a watercourse carved out by centuries of extraction work, where miners channelled water to help wash tin from the surrounding moorland. You walk alongside what amounts to an open wound in the landscape, a reminder of how thoroughly the industry shaped this corner of Dartmoor.

It's not dramatic or photogenic in the conventional sense. No ruins, no interpretive boards, just the gully itself and the knowledge of what went on here. That's partly what makes it worth seeking out. History enthusiasts and walkers with a genuine interest in industrial archaeology will find it compelling - there's something about standing in a feature shaped by hand labour centuries ago that no museum can quite replicate. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming after five minutes, if I'm honest.

The walk is straightforward and sits comfortably within a broader exploration of Dartmoor National Park, just 3.8 miles away. Time it for an afternoon ramble rather than a full-day commitment. Spring and early summer work best when the moorland vegetation is less overgrown and the gully itself is easier to trace. There's no visitor infrastructure - bring a map, decent boots, and check the weather beforehand. It's free, obviously. Solo walkers and historians will get more from this than families looking for thrills.
