Skense Copse

A proper woodland walk tucked away between Horsham and the Sussex countryside, Skense Copse is the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's not dramatic or famous - just mature deciduous forest with good paths threading through, the kind of spot where you can actually hear yourself think.

The woodland itself is fairly typical Sussex - oaks, beech, and hazel creating decent canopy cover. Ground flora changes with the seasons: bluebells in spring, decent fern coverage later on. Birds are active here, which appeals to anyone with binoculars and patience. The paths are generally firm underfoot, though they can get boggy near the edges after rain.

Walkers will find it worth an hour or so, maybe longer if you're not rushed. It's the sort of place that's better on a grey morning than a sunny afternoon - less crowded, better light filtering through the trees. Don't expect views or dramatic features. Come for the walking itself and the chance to slow down.

Getting there from Horsham takes twenty minutes or so by car. If you're basing yourself at Sumners Ponds Fishery & Campsite six miles away, this makes a decent morning detour without eating a whole day. Bring wellies if it's been wet. Free access - you just park and go. Best visited autumn through early spring when you can actually see the woodland structure rather than being swallowed by summer greenery.
