Skaylock Hill

Stand at the top of this modest County Durham summit and you'll understand why locals speak fondly of Skaylock Hill. The views stretch across the surrounding countryside, taking in the rolling hills that define this corner of the North East. It's not the most dramatic peak you'll ever climb, but there's something quietly satisfying about reaching the top.

Walkers will find the most to enjoy here, particularly those who appreciate a good ramble without the crowds that plague more famous fells. The ascent isn't particularly challenging - families with older children should manage it without too much huffing and puffing. From Consett, it's an easy drive to the starting point.

What makes this hill worth the effort is its position in the landscape. You're close enough to several decent holiday parks like Allensford Holiday Park and Heather View Holiday Park to make it a proper day out, yet far enough from the beaten track to feel like you've discovered something genuine. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, longer if you fancy a proper picnic at the summit. The hill works well as part of a longer walking holiday in the area - there's enough here to justify the detour, but probably not enough to build an entire break around.
