Sizergh Castle

The tower is what stops you in your tracks - a proper medieval pele tower that's been standing guard over this corner of Cumbria since the 14th century. Sizergh Castle starts there and sprawls outward, a rambling mix of Elizabethan additions and later developments that tell the story of one family's slow evolution from fortress to country house.

Inside, the chimneypieces are exceptional - genuinely some of the finest carved stone and oak you'll see anywhere. The plasterwork is pristine, and the bedrooms feel lived-in rather than museum-sterile, which makes a real difference. Allow a good two hours to do it justice, maybe three if you're into the finer points of Tudor joinery.

Histor enthusiasts will have the most to chew on here - the place reads like a textbook of architectural ambition across five centuries. Families with younger kids might find it a bit heavy on the "look but don't touch" factor, though the grounds are lovely for a roam around. The gardens are low-key and worth a stroll, nothing showy.

It's on the National Trust, so expect to pay admission unless you're a member. Just south of Kendal, it slots nicely into a Lake District trip. If you're camping at Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Fell End Holiday Park, it's barely half an hour's drive - close enough for a half-day visit without it eating up your whole itinerary.
