Site of Kings Meadow Island

There's not much to see at Kings Meadow Island now - just a bit of elevated ground on the outskirts of Stanley where the River Wear bends round. But this is where things got properly dramatic in 1346. A Scottish raiding party led by William Douglas got absolutely battered here by the English, and the English claimed victory so loudly they named it the Battle of Neville's Cross, even though the actual fighting happened miles away. Historians still argue about it, which tells you something.

Walking out here, you're rewarded with wide views across the river valley, and there's a nice sense of standing where medieval chaos unfolded. It's not going to hold your attention for hours - you'll be there, have a look round, maybe take a photo, and move on. But if you're already in Stanley visiting friends or passing through, it's worth the fifteen-minute detour to get your head round what happened.

Families with history-minded kids will find it interesting enough as a stop on a broader day out. Walkers following the Wear Valley routes will stumble across it naturally. The nearest proper base is Beamish Glamping, a few miles west, which gives you somewhere comfortable to stay while you're exploring this corner of County Durham. Stanley itself is quite ordinary, but the riverside walks around here are decent enough on a good day.
