Site of Hoselaw Chapel

There's not much left to see at Hoselaw Chapel, to be honest. Just some scattered stones and a bit of raised ground near Coldstream where a medieval chapel once stood. But that's precisely why it's worth a visit if you're staying at Coldstream Holiday Park - it takes about twenty minutes to walk here, and you'll feel like you've actually discovered something rather than joined a queue behind fifty other tourists.

The chapel was built sometime in the medieval period and served the local community for centuries before falling into disrepair. Walking the site now, you can make out the rough footprint of the building and spot fragments of stone that hint at what once was. It's the sort of place that appeals to history buffs and walkers more than families with young children - there's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities whatsoever. Just land and silence and the wind across the Scottish Borders.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though it's worth asking at Coldstream Holiday Park before heading out to confirm the current state of the site. Allow an hour if you're walking from the holiday park - it's a decent ramble across proper borderland. Autumn's probably best, when the light's that particular shade of gold and you won't be fighting midges. Winter's fine too if you don't mind damp grass and mud. This isn't a major draw on its own, but paired with exploring Coldstream itself and the wider Borders countryside, it adds a layer of genuine discovery to a holiday.
