Site of Ayton Hall

The ruins of Ayton Hall sit quietly on the landscape near Coldstream, a motte-and-bailey castle that's been reclaimed by grass and time. There's not much left to excavate here - the earthworks are the real draw, that distinctive raised mound where the keep once stood, ringed by defensive ditches you can still make out if you know what you're looking for. Walking the perimeter takes perhaps twenty minutes, depending on how long you linger wondering what the medieval occupants saw from their vantage point. It's the kind of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and anyone serious about castles rather than casual visitors expecting dramatic ruins. The site is free and accessible year-round, though winter mud can make the ground properly boggy. Local history buffs will find it worthwhile; kids under eight might struggle to stay engaged without significant narration from a parent. Coldstream itself is just down the road - a workable base for exploring the Borders - and Coldstream Holiday Park sits reasonably close if you're planning a longer stay.
