Sir William's Hill

The walk up Sir William's Hill rewards you with proper views across the Hampshire countryside - the sort of prospect that makes the climb worthwhile on a clear day. It's not a massive peak, but the vantage point from the top gives you a real sense of the landscape rolling away toward Petersfield and beyond.

This is walkers' territory. The ascent itself isn't punishing, though it's steep enough in places to get your legs working. You'll want to allow a good hour for the climb and time to stand about at the summit taking it in. Families with younger children might find it a bit of a slog, but teenagers who can manage a proper hike will get something out of the effort.

The hill sits well within reach of several camping bases in the area. Cedar Valley is just over a mile away, making it an easy evening walk from your pitch. Woodlands Camping and Glamping at Wallops Wood offer good alternatives if you're looking for something slightly different - and they're close enough that Sir William's Hill works as a day's activity without eating up half your morning getting there.

Go when the weather's settled. A murky day makes the walk feel more laborious and you'll miss what the views are actually about. Early autumn or spring tends to work best - not too hot on the climb, and the light's often clearer. Bring water and decent boots; the ground can be boggy in patches after rain.
