Sir John's Belt

A sprawling woodland just outside Nottingham that feels properly remote despite being barely five miles from the city centre. Sir John's Belt is a working forest with real character - the sort of place where you can actually lose an hour wandering without hitting a cafe or a visitor centre trying to sell you something.

The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric, with a decent network of paths threading through mature trees. You'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right, and the whole place has that quiet, slightly wild feeling that's increasingly rare near urban areas. The forest is active timber land rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means you might see forestry work happening - not everyone's cup of tea, but honest at least.

It's worth bringing proper walking boots as the ground gets boggy in places, particularly after rain. An hour is minimum; three hours if you're in no rush. Dog walkers absolutely love it here, and it's genuinely free to roam.

For a park-based holiday in the area, this pairs well with Janson Fishery just up the road - you've got a solid base within striking distance of actual woodland rather than being tethered to manicured campsite grounds. The approach from Nottingham itself is straightforward enough, though parking can be tight on weekends. Go midweek if you can.
