Simpson Ground Reservoir

Water levels rise and fall with the seasons at Simpson Ground, a modest reservoir tucked into Cumbrian moorland just inland from the A590 corridor. It's not a dramatic sight - no towering dams or visitor centres here - but that's rather the appeal. The walk around the perimeter is straightforward enough, with decent views across the water toward the fells, and on a clear day you'll spot why people bother making the trip out here.

This is one for a gentle afternoon ramble rather than a full day's outing. The reservoir sits maybe three miles or so from Newby Bridge, close enough for a quick detour if you're exploring the southern lakes region. Walkers tend to do the circuit in under an hour, which makes it a sensible leg-stretcher between other pursuits. Families with younger children might find it a bit thin on activities - there's walking and that's largely it - but older kids who don't mind a straightforward route will be fine.

The real value is in the quiet. Car parks can get rammed at other Lakeland spots, but Simpson Ground sits peacefully ignored by most tourists. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the water attracts various waterfowl depending on season.
