Simonscales Wood

Walking through Simonscales Wood near Cockermouth feels like stumbling into proper fell country without the scramble. It's a decent woodland stretch - the sort of place where you actually get some shelter from the weather, which matters more than you'd think in Cumbria. The trees are solid enough, paths wind through reasonably well, and if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites like Castle Guards Farm Retreat or Greysouthen, it's close enough for a morning potter without much faffing about.

This works best for people who want something between a garden stroll and a full Lake District fell walk. Families with younger kids can manage it without complaint, and dog walkers will find it functional rather than spectacular. The woodland itself doesn't demand hours - you're looking at 45 minutes to an hour depending on which way you loop it - so don't expect a full day's mission.

It slots in nicely if you're doing the Cockermouth circuit. Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite is three and a half miles away, which puts you within reasonable reach. There's no charge as far as anyone can tell, and there's no faffing with opening hours because it's just woodland. Go when the ground's not waterlogged though - it can get boggy after rain, and you'll end up spending more time cleaning wellies than actually enjoying the trees.

Not a destination on its own, but a solid addition to a Cumbrian park holiday when you want to stretch your legs without heading to the bigger attractions.
