Fitz Park

Just outside Cockermouth, Fitz Park is a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction - which is exactly what makes it worth your time. You're getting mature forest, riverside paths, and the kind of quiet that actually feels rare in the Lake District these days.

The walk meanders alongside the River Cocker, and depending on water levels, you'll spot genuinely good birding opportunities. Tree-lined trails mean it's decent in light rain, though the paths get boggy after heavy downpour. Most people allow two to three hours for a circular route, but you can do shorter loops if you're traveling with younger kids.

Historically minded visitors get a kick out of the old stone bridges and the fact the woods have been managed since Victorian times - there's a sense of layered history without any interpretive boards beating you over the head with it. Families with walkers aged six and up will manage the terrain fine; pushchair users should check conditions first as roots and drainage ditches dominate sections.

Stay at Greysouthen Caravan Site or Castle Guards Farm Retreat - both are just 2.4 miles away and give you easy access to Cockermouth's town amenities. Forest Views Caravan Park, five miles out, works too if you want slightly more breathing room. The park slots neatly into a Lake District itinerary for a morning outing before heading toward bigger attractions. Bring proper boots and check the weather forecast - exposed woodland in Cumbria can turn grim fast.
