Silverbarton Hill

The walk up Silverbarton Hill from Burntisland takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Firth of Forth. It's not a dramatic peak - you're looking at something under 300 metres - but on a clear day you'll see right across to Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills beyond.

This is classic East Fife walking territory. The route itself winds through mixed woodland before opening out onto moorland, and the summit is marked with a trig point and a small cairn. The real appeal here is that it doesn't draw crowds. You'll likely have the place largely to yourself, which makes a nice change from the more famous Fife coastal walks.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger children might find the moorland stretch a bit of a slog. Allow two hours if you're taking your time and stopping for the views. Spring and early autumn are best - the winter ground can get boggy and muddy.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Pettycur Bay or Sandhills are both within easy reach - this makes a solid morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's close enough to Burntisland town centre to combine with a proper explore of the harbour and the decent fish and chips spots along the front. Not a destination walk in itself, but exactly the sort of thing you do when you're spending a week in Fife and want to get your legs stretched without overcommitting.
