Silloth Promenade

The sea breeze hits you properly hard along Silloth's promenade - that's the first thing you notice. This three-mile stretch of Victorian promenade sweeps along the Solway Firth with wide, well-maintained paths that feel genuinely grand without the crowds you'd get at busier coastal spots. You're walking past ornamental gardens, a decent playground for the kids, and views across to Scotland on a clear day. It's the sort of place where you can actually think.

The promenade works brilliantly for families staying at Stanwix Park or Solway Holiday Park, both practically on your doorstep - five or ten minutes' walk at most. A full stroll takes about an hour each way if you're taking it easy, though most people do circuits of 20 minutes or so. There's a boating lake, the old lighthouse if you want a specific point to head towards, and enough space that it never feels rammed even during school holidays.

Historywise, it's a proper Victorian seaside development - a bit faded round the edges now, but that's rather charming. The estuary light and the wide promenade have attracted artists for years, and you'll understand why within five minutes of arriving. Free to walk, obviously, and best visited when the tide's out if you want the full three miles.

Wigton is just a few miles inland if you need supplies, but honestly you won't want to leave this stretch. Combine it with North Lakes Country Park inland - they're different enough to fill a proper week - and you've got a solid corner of Cumbria covered.
