Siding Lane Nature Reserve

The reserve sits quietly on the edge of Skelmersdale, and it's the sort of place you'd walk straight past if you weren't paying attention. But stop and linger for twenty minutes, and you start to notice what's actually going on here - wetland, woodland, the occasional flash of something interesting in the undergrowth.

Siding Lane is small and manageable, which makes it ideal if you've got restless kids or limited time. The paths are straightforward enough, though after rain they can get boggy. You're looking at thirty minutes to an hour for a proper walk rather than a full morning commitment. Birdwatchers do well here, particularly in spring and autumn when migration's on. Dragonflies in summer are a draw too.

It's free to visit, which helps, and there's no faffing about with opening hours - you simply turn up. The reserve works brilliantly as a break from driving if you're staying at The Secret Garden Glamping just down the road. Two miles isn't far, and it gives you a proper stretch of the legs without demanding anything ambitious.

Honestly though, it's not a destination in itself. You're not driving here specially from Manchester or Liverpool. But if you're based locally for a few days, it's worth an afternoon visit. The Reserve has that quiet, undeveloped feel that's increasingly rare - no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. Just the space and whatever wildlife's about. For that kind of simplicity, it's rather good.
