Sidford Wood

Dark, ancient woodland squats just south of Uttoxeter, and Sidford Wood feels properly undisturbed - the sort of place where you half-expect to bump into a forester from the 1800s. Paths wind through dense stands of oak and beech, and the canopy gets thick enough that even on bright days it stays cool and shadowy underneath. No manicured trails here. It's genuine forest, which means muddy boots and occasional scrambling over fallen branches.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - you're looking at an hour or so if you potter about properly - but it pairs brilliantly with a stay at Lane Tree Hideaways nearby, which sits only four miles off. The wood works as a proper morning walk before heading into Uttoxeter for lunch, or a late-afternoon ramble if the weather's holding. Children do well here too, provided they're the type who enjoy actual woodland rather than facilities. There's something about being properly surrounded by trees that keeps them engaged.

Bring a map or phone signal if you're not local - the paths don't have obvious signage, and it's easy to wander in circles. Free access as far as anyone knows, and you can roll up whenever. Spring's excellent when the undergrowth's emerging, but honestly, it's worth a visit any time you're after a bit of genuine English forest without the crowds.
