Shuttleworth

The airfield near Henlow holds one of Britain's finest collections of working aircraft, many of which you'll actually see flying. Shuttleworth isn't some stuffy aviation museum where everything's behind velvet ropes - you walk among real Spitfires, Hurricanes, and biplanes that still take to the air on display days. The hangars are packed with machines from across the 20th century, and what strikes you most is how hands-on it all feels. Staff are genuinely knowledgeable, not just reading from a script.

Flying days are the main event - these happen regularly through the warmer months and draw proper crowds. If you catch one, you'll see these old birds actually performing, which is extraordinary. On non-flying days it's quieter but still absorbing, especially for anyone with even a passing interest in aircraft engineering or wartime history. Kids tend to stay engaged longer here than your average museum because the planes aren't abstract - they're real machines you can almost touch.

Allow two to three hours minimum, longer if there's a flying display on. It's about four miles east of Henlow, making it a natural pairing with Henlow Bridge Lakes if you're staying nearby for a park holiday. The site's well-maintained, the café is decent enough, and parking's straightforward. Check their calendar before visiting - flying days feel like an entirely different experience from static viewing days, and the difference matters.
