Shotley Heritage Park

The walk into Shotley Heritage Park takes you through proper Suffolk countryside - flat, open, and honest. It's a nature reserve on the peninsula between the Rivers Orwell and Stour, just east of Harwich, where the landscape hasn't been messed about with much. You'll find yourself on footpaths threading through grassland, past reed beds, and along stretches where you can actually hear yourself think.

What makes it worthwhile is the birds. Serious birdwatchers come here for winter migrants and summer breeders - the kind of thing that requires binoculars and patience, but if you're even mildly interested in wildlife, there's genuine appeal. The paths are flat and easy, which means families with younger kids won't struggle, though toddlers might find it dull after an hour or so. It's the sort of place where you go to move around, not to sit and gawp.

Admission is free, as it should be. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously, or 45 minutes if you're just after a straightforward walk. The nearest proper base is Harwich, which is functional rather than charming, but the holiday parks around Felixstowe - particularly Peewit Caravans, which actually scores well - are close enough that you could easily fit this into a wider coastal break. It pairs well with a beach day, though don't expect anything dramatic. It's understated, genuinely useful for stretching your legs, and honest about what it is.
