Shortoak Coppice

Ancient woodland doesn't get much better than Shortoak Coppice, a proper working coppice just a few miles south of Ludlow in Herefordshire. The forest floor here is carpeted with bluebells come spring, and the mix of hazel, oak and ash creates that distinctive dappled light you only find in well-managed woodland. There's something deeply satisfying about walking through a landscape that's been actively managed for centuries - this isn't wilderness, it's heritage.

You can wander the paths at your own pace, and there's real value in just stopping to listen. The canopy work means it's never gloomy, and walkers particularly enjoy it because the terrain is forgiving - no brutal climbs, just proper forest floor walking. Kids under ten might find it a bit quiet compared to a theme park, but older children and teenagers appreciate the space to explore without feeling herded.

The coppice is free to access, and you can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day here depending on how contemplative you're feeling. Spring is obviously peak season, but winter brings its own rewards - the bare branches let you actually see the structure of the woodland. Summer can feel airless on hot days.

If you're camped at Churchbridge Glamping or Orchard Holiday Park just down the road, this is an easy morning or afternoon slot without driving far. It pairs well with a Ludlow exploration - the town's got proper architecture and decent restaurants if you want to make a day of it. Shortoak itself won't blow your mind if you're expecting drama, but it rewards you if you're after genuine woodland calm.
