Shorley Copse

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Shorley Copse sits just outside Alresford and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a Hampshire forest - beech trees, damp earth underfoot, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget the A31 exists somewhere beyond the treeline. The paths are well-maintained and easy to follow, threading through mixed woodland that's genuinely pleasant without being dramatic. You won't find viewpoints or facilities here, just trees and birdsong.

It's ideal for families wanting a straightforward hour's ramble or walkers using it as a warm-up before tackling the longer routes across Hampshire's chalk hills. Dog walkers absolutely love it. On a grey afternoon in November, when the light filters through bare branches, it's rather atmospheric. In summer it can feel a touch claustrophobic - everything's green and the paths narrow.

There's no admission fee and no opening hours to worry about; you simply turn up and walk. Allow an hour if you take it slowly, thirty minutes if you just want to tick a box. It works particularly well alongside a stay at one of the nearby caravan parks - Woodlands Camping and The Spinney are both three and a half miles away, or push slightly further to Cedar Valley if you want a bit more space. Shorley Copse itself won't keep you occupied all day, but it's the kind of place that makes a weekend feel properly outdoorsy without demanding much effort.
